I got an email the other day to win a trip. All you had to do was write a budget travel story (no more than 250 words). Here is our entry guys!!! Hold thumbs that we win!
It was stinking hot in Namibia December 2003 and we had been planning our three-week group camping tour for over a year!
33 of us in a convoy of vehicles, excited and keen to get to our first destination. We had such a blast even though we were on a strict budget and sometimes we reverted to “Budget Meals” at night. Beans on toast and a box of biscuits shared out between the group.
With an 11 month old baby in tow, by Day 2 we converted the back of a VW kombi into a “nursery” for the baby and she was happy not being strapped into her car seat for 4 or 5 hours a day in the blazing Namibian sun. If she was hot, we’d empty out her toy box and doubled it up as a mini splash pool for her. Problem solved.
We planned to stay in a different place each day, except over Christmas, where we spent three days at one stop-over. We went quad biking, climbed to the top of Dune 7 together, rode camels, visited Swartkopmund, even went up as far as the Etosha Pan where one of our group members had a “nature call” and walked out on to the pan with his toilet roll under his arm. I wonder if his turd it still there?
A brilliant trip that is still spoken of fondly over 5 years later!
Planning for our December 2010 Road Trip to Swaziland is underway
